Dr. Bansal grew up in Ohio and completed an Accelerated 6-year, combined undergraduate and medical degree in Northeast Ohio where he was selected as a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society. While in medical school, he was selected to participate in the prestigious Howard Hughes Research Scholars Program at the National Institutes of Health in Washington DC, where he investigated the basic mechanisms of macular degeneration.
Following his internship, Dr. Bansal completed his Residency in Ophthalmology at the Emory Eye Center in Atlanta, ranked in the top-10 Ophthalmologic Residency Programs. During residency, Dr. Bansal traveled to Nicaragua to perform cataract surgery for the underserved. Dr. Bansal then pursued an additional 2-year Fellowship in Vitreoretinal Diseases and Surgery at the world-renowned Wills Eye Hospital in Philadelphia where he worked closely with many of the pioneers of vitreoretinal surgery. During fellowship, Dr. Bansal was awarded the National Research Award at the Retina Fellows’ Forum for his work on vitrectomy surgery. Dr. Bansal has authored numerous journal articles and book chapters in the Ophthalmic literature and presented his research at many national meetings. He is currently a reviewer for the American Journal of Ophthalmology, Archives of Ophthalmology, and Retina.
Dr. Bansal is a Board-Certified Ophthalmologist specializing in all aspects of vitreoretinal diseases. His clinical interests include age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and retinal vein occlusions. He has extensive surgical experience in the management of complicated retinal detachments, macular hole, epiretinal membrane, diabetic retinopathy, complications of cataract surgery, and dislocated intraocular lenses. He is an active member of the American Society of Retina Specialists and American Academy of Ophthalmology. He is an Assistant Clinical Professor at the UCSF-VA Medical Center in San Francisco where he teaches residents.

BIOGRAPHY
Dr. Boldrey is a native Californian, born in San Francisco and raised in the Bay Area. He graduated with Honors in Pre-Medical Science from DePauw University in Indiana. He then stayed in the Midwest, graduating from Northwestern University Medical School in Chicago. After a year of general surgery residency at the University of Minnesota, Dr. Boldrey spent two years as a Medical Officer in the US Navy.
Dr. Boldrey then returned to the Bay Area for his Ophthalmology residency at the University of California San Francisco Medical Center, where he received the prestigious Asbury Award. He subsequently moved to Missouri where, as a Heed Ophthalmic Foundation Fellow, he completed a fellowship in Diseases and Surgery of the Retina and Vitreous at Barnes Hospital, Washington University, St. Louis.
Dr. Boldrey is board certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology. He has been elected into membership in the Retina Society. He is a Charter Member of the American Society of Retina Specialists and helped found the Western Retina Study Club, where he served as Executive Secretary Treasurer for eleven years. He is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and has been given its Honor Award for his work with that organization. He has been President of the Cordes Eye Society and of the Peninsula Eye Society and is a member of the American College of Surgeons and the American Medical Association. For the last several years, he has served as President of this practice.
Dr. Boldrey has maintained an interest in research and teaching throughout his career. He has authored or coauthored 30 scientific papers, and has given more than 100 research and educational presentations at medical meetings. Areas of special research interest have included pioneering work that preceded pneumatic repair of retinal detachment, early work on laser for a central form of wet macular degeneration, and work on clarifying the significance of certain signs and symptoms of retinal tears. He has been an invited reviewer for various medical journals, including RETINA, the Archives of Ophthalmology, the American Journal of Ophthalmology, and the British Journal of Ophthalmology.
Dr. Boldrey greatly enjoys caring for his patients, and has received the Castle Connolly’s “Top Doctor” Award and the American Registry’s “Patients’ Choice Award”, as well as being listed in “Who’s Who in America”. In his free time, he enjoys traveling and spending time with his family.

Dr. Borrillo grew up in Chicago and completed his undergraduate and medical degree at Northwestern University. As an undergraduate, he published his first paper in the Journal of the American Chemical Society and graduated with Honors in Chemistry. In medical school, he did research with Dr. E. Lee Stock on surgical wound healing of the cornea and was selected as a member of the Alpha Omega Honor Society.
Following his internship, Dr. Borrillo completed his Residency in Ophthalmology at the Eye Institute in Milwaukee. As Chief Resident, Dr. Borrillo traveled to the Philippines to share surgical techniques with Filipino Ophthalmology residents as well as perform cataract surgeries for the underserved rural areas. Dr. Borrillo then pursued an additional 2-year Fellowship in Vitreoretinal Diseases and Surgery at the historic Wills Eye Hospital in Philadelphia where he worked closely with a multitude of world-renowned pioneers in retinal disease and vitreoretinal surgical techniques. Dr. Chang grew up in Newton, Massachusetts. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Biological Sciences from Stanford University, graduating Phi Beta Kappa and with Honors and Distinction. Dr. Chang then earned his MD and PhD degrees from Washington University Medical School through the Medical Scientist Training Program. In addition to the standard medical school curriculum, he performed in-depth research for his doctoral thesis on how cells in the nervous system die in various diseases.
Dr. Chang completed his ophthalmology residency at UCLA / Jules Stein Eye Institute. During residency, he received the resident award for ophthalmic knowledge and the resident award for Excellence in Ophthalmic Surgery. Dr. Chang then performed a fellowship in medical and surgical diseases of the retina and vitreous at Columbia University in New York City. During fellowship, Dr. Chang was a recipient of the Heed Ophthalmic FoundationFellowship, awarded nationally to top clinical fellows in ophthalmology. In addition, he received the Ronald G. Michels Fellowship Foundation award, given to outstanding fellows in vitreoretinal surgery.
He then joined the faculty at Columbia University, where he was the Helen and Martin Kimmel Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology. Dr. Chang gained extensive experience with managing complicated surgical cases, including complex retinal detachments. In addition to his clinical responsibilities, he was also involved in many clinical, translational and basic science research projects. Dr. Chang was also actively involved in teaching medical students, residents and fellows and was recognized with a teaching award from the ophthalmology residents.
Dr. Chang is Board certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology. He has published numerous original research articles and book chapters on a wide variety of retinal and ophthalmic topics. He is an active member of the American Society of Retina Specialists, American Academy of Ophthalmology and the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology. Stewart A. Daniels, MD
Stewart Daniels, M.D.
Stewart A. Daniels, M.D. was born and raised in Los Angeles. He graduated with dual degrees and with Honors and Distinction from Stanford University. As a medical student at the prestigious School of Medicine at the University of California at Los Angeles, Dr. Daniels received the merit-based Anna Bing Arnold Scholarship. He was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha honor society. He pursued research and co-authored papers in the departments of ophthalmology, neurology, and psychology. While pursuing externships in ophthalmology at the Joslin Diabetes Center in Boston and Pacific Medical Center in San Francisco, he confirmed his fascination with the retina.
Dr. Daniels stayed in California for his graduate medical training. He completed his internship at Mercy Hospital in San Diego. He returned to Los Angeles for his Ophthalmology Residency and Vitreoretinal Fellowship at the Jules Stein Eye Institute at UCLA. He joined Bay Area Retina Associates in 1988.
Dr. Daniels is a member of the American Society of Retinal Specialists, the California Medical Association, the Alameda Contra Costa Medical Association, and the East Bay Ophthalmology Society. He is Board Certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology and is a fellow in the American Academy of Ophthalmology. He has served as the Chairman of the John Muir Medical Center Department of Ophthalmology. He is an assistant clinical professor at UCSF and California Pacific Medical Center. Dr. Daniels has spoken at several national and international meetings. He has published peer-reviewed articles on ophthalmic conditions. He has served as principal investigator and co-investigator on numerous clinical trials relating to medical and surgical retinal care, including the Diabetic Retinopathy Clinical Research Network. He has been recognized as one of the “top doctors” in the East Bay by his colleagues.
Aside from his passion for providing excellent, compassionate care for his patients, Dr. Daniels enjoys the fine dining found in the San Francisco Bay Area. This necessitates road cycling, hiking with his flat-coated retriever, and trail running through the beautiful East Bay hills. He has a keen interest in computer technology. He met his wife, a Boston native, while both were at Stanford. There he cooked and ran the kitchen of her dormitory. Their two daughters are on the East Coast pursuing their own degrees. The family enjoys travelling the world together.

Roger A. Goldberg, M.D., M.B.A, a native of Boston, graduated from both college and medical school at Yale University. He completed his residency in Miami at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, the nation’s top eye hospital and residency-training program. He returned to Boston for a fellowship in Vitreoretinal Diseases and Surgery at Tufts and Ophthalmic Consultants of Boston. Dr. Goldberg is board certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology, and is an active member of the American Society of Retinal Specialists and the American Academy of Ophthalmology.
Dr. Goldberg has published numerous research manuscripts and book chapters, including first-author publications in The New England Journal of Medicine, Ophthalmology, JAMA Ophthalmology, and American Journal of Ophthalmology. He serves as a Reviewer for the AJO and Retina, and has lectured at national and international meetings. He has been an investigator in over 20 clinical trials for age-related macular degeneration, retinal vein occlusion, diabetic retinopathy, and vitreomacular adhesion. His surgical interests include complex retinal detachment repair, endoscopic surgery, and complications of cataract surgery.
Between college and medical school, Dr. Goldberg spent a year as a Rotary Scholar at the University of Leiden, The Netherlands, and then worked as a healthcare consultant at McKinsey & Co. In addition to his medical training, Dr. Goldberg received an MBA from Yale and co-founded an ophthalmic startup company.

Dr. Haidt retired in 2014. Northern California Retina Vitreous Associates (NCRVA) began in 1983 as Dr. Haidt’s solo practice in Mountain View, California. Our physicians continue to treat many of Dr. Haidt’s patients.
Dr. Haidt grew up in Washington, DC. He then received a Bachelor of Engineering Science degree (with honors) and granted membership in Tau Beta Pi– (National Engineering Honor Society) at the University of Virginia. Dr. Haidt received his MD from Albert Einstein University College of Medicine with additional matriculation in the PhD program in Pharmacology. He then served as a Lieutenant Commander in the United States Public Health Services in Rockville, Maryland. Dr. Haidt completed his Ophthalmology Residency as Chief Resident at Stanford. He then completed his surgical retina fellowship training at UCLA / Jules Stein Eye Institute in Los Angeles. Dr. Haidt was involved in clinical trials investigating treatments for diabetic retinopathy.
Northern California Retina Vitreous Associates (NCRVA) began in 1983 as Dr. Haidt’s solo practice in Mountain View, California. NCRVA has subsequently grown to six offices with eight retinal specialists. Prior to founding Northern California Retina Vitreous Associates, Dr. Haidt practiced in Cincinnati, Ohio. During that time, he did seminal research on the use of perflurocarbons in the eye and was awarded US Patent No. #4452818.
Dr. Haidt is Board Certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology. He is an active member of multiple professional societies including the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology and the American Society of Retina Specialists. He presently holds an academic appointment at Stanford University Department of Ophthalmology as Clinical Associate Professor of Ophthalmology
Dr. Haidt loves to provide care for his patients, using the state-of-art diagnostic, therapeutic and surgical methodology, combined with a humane concern. He has an active family and community life with adult children who live in the Bay Area. Dr. Khurana grew up in the Bay Area and earned a Bachelor of Science degree and a Master of Science degree at Stanford University where he graduated with Honors, with Distinction and Phi Beta Kappa. He then attended the Duke University School of Medicine where he won the Humanism in Medicine award. Dr. Khurana completed his Ophthalmology Residency and Fellowship in Uveitis and Intraocular Inflammation at the prestigious Doheny Eye Institute at the University of Southern California (USC). He then finished a Fellowship in Vitreoretinal Disease at the premier Wilmer Eye Institute at the Johns Hopkins Medical Center. He won the exclusive Heed Ophthalmic Foundation and Ron G. Michels Fellowship Awards, given to the top fellows in the country.
Dr. Khurana is active with clinical research in developing new treatments for various retinal diseases. He has published over 70 peer reviewed scientific papers, been honored with numerous national awards and involved in over 60 clinical trials. Dr. Khurana has been awarded research grants from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, Research to Prevent Blindness, Fight for Sight, Allergan and Regeneron. He is also an Associate Clinical Professor in Ophthalmology at UCSF Medical Center where he teaches UCSF residents. He was recently recognized with the Crowell Beard Award for Excellence in Clinical Teaching. He was also independently elected into the prestigious Retina and Macula Societies. Dr. Khurana has been quoted in numerous national publications such as the New York Times, The Washington Post, Prevention Magazine, and the San Jose Mercury News on various retinal topics.
Dr. Khurana is heavily involved with the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the American Society of Retinal Specialists where he serves on many committees. He currently serves as the Editor-in-Chief of the Ophthalmic News and Education (ONE) Network, which serves more than 100,000 eye physicians and surgeons around the world. He was given the American Academy of Ophthalmology Achievement Award and the American Society of Retina Specialists Honor and SENIOR Award for his work with those organizations. Dr. Khurana was recognized by the American Medical Association as one of the top 51 emerging national leaders expected to make a strong impact on the future of medicine.

Craig Leong, M.D., grew up in a small farming community in central California where his father practiced family medicine for forty years. He received his undergraduate degree from Stanford University and attended Northwestern University Medical School in Chicago.
It was during medical school that Dr. Leong became attracted to the beautiful images and delicate surgery of ophthalmology. He took his residency in ophthalmology at the State University of New York and a fellowship in retinal surgery at the Manhattan Eye and Ear Hospital – Cornell University Medical Center. During this time he was an Investigator for the Diabetic Retinopathy Vitrectomy Study. This was followed by a fellowship in medical retina with Francis L’Esperance, Jr., M.D., one of the co-developers of the argon laser for use in ophthalmology.
As an Assistant Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology at the UCSF School of Medicine he has actively participated in the resident teaching program for more than 20 years. Dr. Leong has a special interest in repairing complicated retinal detachments and treating diabetic retinopathy. As an Investigator for the Visudyne in Age Related Macular Degeneration Trial in 1999-2000 and as a Principal Investigator for the Genentach Focus, Marina, and Pier Studies of Lucentis in 2003-2005, Dr. Leong has remained at the forefront of the latest treatment modalities for macular degeneration.
When he is away from the office Dr. Leong is dedicated to his family. Together they do homework, play piano, attend concerts, and go to the theater and ballet. Each winter the family enjoys skiing and throughout the year they spend their vacations traveling.

Dr. Luo is a board certified vitreo-retinal surgeon, who specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of retinal diseases and conditions. Dr. Luo graduated Magna Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Biology from the University of Rochester, Rochester, New York. Dr. Luo continued his education at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry where he earned his medical degree with a Distinction in Community Service. Dr. Luo completed his medical internship at Albert Einstein Medical Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; followed by his ophthalmology residency at Wills Eye Institute also in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Dr. Luo completed his training with a vitreo-retinal fellowship, including pediatric retinal surgery at Associated Retinal Consultants in Royal Oak, Michigan.
He has earned many academic honors and awards during his training. During his ophthalmology residency at Wills Eye Institute, Dr. Luo was selected as Co-Chief Resident. He has authored and co-authored many research publications and has lectured at international conferences on various ocular conditions and diseases, especically those associated with the retina. Dr. Luo resides in the Rockridge area with his wife, Melissa. He enjoys classical piano, traveling, soccer, skiing, and road biking.

Dr. Sternretired in 2011. He was one of the first two retina specialists practicing at Northern California Retina Vitreous Associates. Our physicians continue to treat many of Dr. Stern’s patients.
Dr. Stern attended Dartmouth College, graduating as a member of the academic honorary society, Phi Beta Kappa. From there he attended medical school at the University of Chicago where he achieved similar academic distinction for which he was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha medical honorary society. Dr. Stern stayed there for his internship and then for his ophthalmology residency, rising to the position of chief resident. He remained at that institution for his retinal fellowship.
Dr. Stern joined the faculty of the University of California, San Francisco, where he served initially as the acting Chief of Ophthalmology and then as the Director of the Vitreoretinal Service for the next 15 years. In addition to teaching medical students, ophthalmology residents and retinal fellows, Dr. Stern worked hard to help practicing ophthalmologists and retinal surgeons hone their skills. He organized and chaired several vitrectomy and microsurgical workshops during that time and organized and chaired several ophthalmologic meetings. He taught extensively at meetings of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, eventually receiving its Honor award; and also authored laboratory vitrectomy teaching manuals to help other vitreoretinal surgeons.
In addition to teaching, he enjoyed and excelled at research. He directed the Proliferative Vitreoretinopathy Study Group, and was co-director of the Uveitis Survey. He was awarded nine different grants to fund a variety of research projects, including the National Institute of Health’s multicenter trial that established the efficacy of silicone oil in complicated retinal detachments. He authored or coauthored 59 research papers in medical journals, coauthored chapters in three different medical textbooks, and was a co-editor of another textbook concerning vitrectomy and surgical techniques. The university recognized his many efforts, and he rose to the level of full Professor of Ophthalmology.
After 14 years in academia, Dr. Stern decided to spend more time with his true professional love, helping patients with complex retinal problems, and so moved to the San Francisco Peninsula, where he joined Dr. Sterling Haidt to form the partnership that is now Northern California Retina Vitreous Associates. His partners especially valued his medical opinions and academic expertise, often referring to him as “The Professor”. During his career, Dr. Stern maintained memberships in multiple exclusive ophthalmologic and retinal organizations, including the Retina Society, the Macula Society, the American Society of Retina Specialists, and the Association for Research and Vision in Ophthalmology.
In his spare time, Dr. Stern has enjoyed golf and skiing, as well as spending time in the mountains near Lake Tahoe. He especially enjoys time with his wife Betty and the rest of his family, and has been able to spend more time with them all since his retirement. He feels fortunate that his children, their spouses, and his five grandchildren are all nearby.

Tushar M. Ranchod, M.D. grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area and completed his undergraduate studies at Stanford University and medical school at the University of California, San Francisco. Dr. Ranchod received his ophthalmology residency training at the University of Pennsylvania’s Scheie Eye Institute with a subsequent fellowship in Vitreoretinal Surgery and Disease at William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak, Michigan.
Dr. Ranchod has published more than 20 research papers and book chapters on topics including age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, retinal laser procedures, vitreoretinal physiology, familial exudative vitreoretinopathy, and current techniques in retinal surgery. He has special interest in the innovation of surgical instruments to facilitate intraocular retinal procedures.
Dr. Ranchod has given talks at both national and international meetings and was a recipient of the prestigious Ronald G. Michels Fellowship award. He is an Assistant Editor for RETINA, the leading scientific journal in the field of vitreoretinal surgery and disease. Dr. Ranchod is board certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology. Dr. Ranchod is a member of the American Society of Retinal Specialists, the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the California Medical Association, and the Alameda-Contra Costa Medical Association. His nonmedical interests include cooking, sculpting, and computer-aided design.

Subhransu K. Ray, MD, PhD

Subhransu Ray, M.D., Ph.D., completed his ophthalmology training at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary at Harvard Medical School. Following residency he was selected as the Chief Resident, appointed as the Director of Eye Trauma, and served as an Associate Chief of Ophthalmology at Harvard Medical School. His fellowship, in Diseases and Surgery of the Retina and Vitreous, was also at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary. He has been awarded the prestigious Heed Ophthalmic Fellowship and the AOS-Knapp Foundation Awards. He has performed ocular research in the field of retinal neovascularization. He also holds a Ph.D. in Immunology. While at Bay Area Retina Associates, he has established multi-center clinical trials for wet Age Related Macular Degeneration, and is involved in developing new treatments for diabetes. Dr. Ray places great value in medical education and has lectured extensively in various topics of ophthalmology. His surgical interests are in diabetes, macular diseases, and ocular trauma.
Dr. Ray’s education has taken him through Maryland, Chicago, New York, and Boston. Dr. Ray enjoys spending time with his wife, who is a nephrologist, and their two daughters. He enjoys cooking, gardening, and playing basketball during his free time.

T. Daniel Ting, MD, PhD
Daniel Ting, M.D., Ph.D.
Dr. Ting grew up on the West Coast (the west coast of Lake Michigan in Chicago). He received his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Chicago and then enrolled in the combined M.D./Ph.D. program at the University of Illinois. He decided on a career in ophthalmology and completed his residency training at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation where he also served as Chief Resident.
He completed his Vitreoretinal fellowship at the Duke University Eye Center where he was granted the Hornaday Fellow Award for excellence in teaching, clinical care, ethics, and research. During his fellowship, Dr. Ting was also awarded the prestigious Knapp Fellowship by the American Ophthalmological Society, as well as the Heed Fellowship by the Heed Ophthalmic Foundation.
Dr. Ting specializes in the latest techniques for the treatment of macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, retinal vascular disease, and retinal detachment. He is involved in several national clinical trials studying new treatments for diabetic retinopathy and retinal vascular disease. He has also published multiple scientific papers and book chapters on vision research.
Dr. Ting is married and has two sons and a dog. He enjoys traveling with his family, computers, and woodworking. He is also passionate about football and was a starting player as a freshman on the University of Chicago football team, home of the first Heisman Trophy winner. His bid to return the Heisman trophy to his alma mater was derailed as he played the unglamorous position of defensive lineman.

Allen Z. Verne, MD, Retired
Allen Verne, M.D. Retired
Born in New York City, Dr. Verne attended Hobart College and then went on to get his medical degree at New York Medical College. His ophthalmology training was done at St. Lukes Hospital Center in New York City and his retina training was at Pacific Medical Center in San Francisco.
Dr. Verne served as the chief of Ophthalmology at L.B.J. Tropical Medical Center in Pago Pago American Samoa. He is the former head of the retina service at Highland hospital and has been chief of ophthalmology at John Muir Hospital. Dr. Verne is an assistant clinical professor and consultant at California Pacific Medical Center. Dr. Verne has a special interest in complicated traumatic problems as well as diabetic retinopathy.
Dr. Verne is a founder and past president of the Vitreous Society, now known as the American Society of Retina Specialists (ASRS). This society is the largest international organization which advances research and education in the diagnosis and treatment of all retinal diseases. Dr. Verne is not only a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, but he is also a member of the French Ophthalmology Society. He has recently been invited to lecture in Paris on new advances and techniques in retinal surgery in the United States. His interests outside of medicine include mountain climbing, skiing and sailing.

BIOGRAPHY
Dr. Wieland, a native of Ohio, comes from a family of doctors. He first discovered the attraction of California when he attended Stanford University, receiving both, a Bachelor of Arts as well as a Master of Science and Biology degree. After graduation Dr. Wieland worked as a marine biologist in the Galapagos Islands in Ecuador, where he was an instructor and researcher at the Charles Darwin Research Center. During this time Dr. Wieland was able to hone his Spanish language skills and remains fluent today.
Although he greatly enjoyed his time in marine biology, Dr. Wieland decided to follow the family tradition and returned to Ohio for medical school, graduating from Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine, where he was inducted into the honors medical society, Alpha Omega Alpha. After returning to California for his internship at the University of California, San Francisco, Dr. Wieland traveled to Philadelphia, for his ophthalmology residency at the prestigious Wills Eye Hospital. He then attended Cornell University where he completed his Vitreoretinal fellowship.
Dr. Wieland returned to the West Coast and joined the practice of Drs. Sterling Haidt and Walter Stern in San Mateo and Mountain View. Dr. Wieland has been instrumental in the growth of the practice since that time. With his help, two additional offices in San Jose were later added, as well as an office in Daily City and Monterey. He has become a recognized leader of the practice and currently holds the position of Chief Executive Officer.
Dr. Wieland has taught throughout his entire career, joining the clinical faculties of the Department of Ophthalmology at both the University of California San Francisco and Stanford University. He currently holds the position of Adjunct Assistant Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology at Stanford. In addition, Dr. Wieland has held the position of visiting professor at the University of Santa Tomas in the Philippines at the University of Costa Rica. Closer to home, he has been chairman of the Division of Ophthalmology at Good Samaritan Hospital.
Dr. Wieland has authored or coauthored multiple papers, has made presentations at several national scientific meetings, and has participated in instruction courses at the American Academy of Ophthalmology. He has been the principal investigator or the sub-investigator in 27 clinical trials, covering a variety of retinal diseases and medications. He has been involved in research to develop methods of imaging of the retina and has a particular interest in drug delivery systems to the posterior pole.
He founded the research division of Retina Vitreous Associates, and is a scientific advisor for many ophthalmic companies. Dr. Wieland maintains memberships in the American Society of Retina Specialist, the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the Western Retina Club, and That Man May See.
He devotes his time as a board member of the Vista Center for the Visually Impaired in Palo Alto. Additionally, he has volunteered for the last 20 years working in the Republic of Palau, performing laser treatments for diabetic retinopathy and performing cataract surgery.
In his spare time, Dr. Wieland relishes spending time with his family, both local and extended, and enjoys scuba diving, swimming, fishing, and gardening.
